“edge of the world”

or so the sign says.

solo lawn chair-

warm waves crashing

forming spear shaped rocks

whining seagulls perch the

glossy mossed tips

look at thee- the “edge

of the world”

warm waves crashing-

a sign.

as eyes closed-

the waves, molding-

warm waves crashing

forming- sizzles

ivory silk sheets

coffee and vanilla fill the empty space.

sizzles raise from the pan

harmony providing sparrow

mug filled to the brim

sun overlooks the island-

the path-

warm waves sizzling-

seagulls carol-

raised feet atop

smoothing, shining stones-

at the edge

of the world.

Bruja’s whisper

she said-
she said she could see the future:
with waves of her palms
a slow breath in
candles flicker from her oak table
bark scented incense smoke swirled
clockwise
towards the ceiling
her exhale.
my palms weak
sweaty

her eyes rolled back
for a second
her fingers touched mine
skin hot as a summer bbq
i could-
i could see
a hot summer bbq
the one last summer-

when-
when he was still around
flipping patties and drinking a cold one
requesting bad bunny for the 12th time
“what’s the dodgers score”
kids playing monsters in the yard.
i remember this, i wanted to tell him i’m-

the incense descended
counter clock wise
candles burned to the stump
her eyes, pale green, weary
focused
in a loss of breath
she said,
“i tried-
i tried
but
all you wanted
was to be back
in
that
moment
just one
more
time.”

new park

same storm-

really just a drizzle

atop a tabletop

with a cigarette bud-

last glare of the sun

before

kidnapped by deadbeat clouds.

honey & vanilla:

couple played on the swings

giddy laughter

their stomps soaked

their bottom halves-

the boy

stopped-

reached into the depths of his pocket-

shivered

a well kept

red note tied with a bow

the girl

stopped-

reached into the depths of his note-

she ate it

and ran away.

serenaded by a robin

smoke ceasing

as the sun peaks past

the over protective clouds-

back against watered boards

held high

a bow

still

right fist

aimed, like a slingshot

above the clouds

at apollo’s open chin-

before he

conducts another somber tune.

grief built like a fire

burning in a bloodied right fist:

broken frames

packed bags

a box-

“trash”-

empty perfume,

empty bottles,

a wrinkled, folded sonogram.

coconut breeze-

it was your favorite-

hangs over the bed,

still,

over your side,

a distant specter.

the fist once aimed

stared back, openly,

empty.

sun kissing the crown

of their would-be assassin,

before being swept,

by drifting clouds.

for hard enough

deep below the surface

past the dirt

the roots

below the unseen life

rests a weary, enchanted mole.

the child snickers from underneath her

covers:

“a mole? with magic?”

“what’s so unbelievable about that?”

meeting her dark, hidden gaze

she erupts from her burrow-

the covers act her cloak-

“well, how come no one’s seen it?”

her hands curl into whiskers.

“maybe we have,”

the child’s face melts into a waiting palm,

weariness in, wonder out,

“maybe we have,

and we weren’t looking for

hard enough.”

field study for an arsonist

“would you burn this all down, to save her?”

his open palm gestured behind him

highlighting a mostly vacant parking lot

convenience store with a couple of loiterers

water-damaged apartment complex with towels hanging from railings

kids playing make-believe

a couple- a couple maybe returning from a lively first date

snickering and whispering, a future alive in their clasped hands

and a homeless man.

I would.
